A recent report by TRIP, a national Transportation Research nonprofit, found that 13% of Pennsylvania's locally and state-maintained bridges are rated in poor condition. The sixth highest rate across the country.

The report says 12% of bridges in an eight-county greater Pittsburgh area are rated in poor condition. That's 510 bridges out of 4,190. The number of bridges in Pennsylvania rated as “poor” has dropped since to 3,022 in 2024 from 5,218 in 2013.  More than 10 million vehicles travel over Pennsylvania bridges that are rated as poor according to the report. This includes more than 1 million vehicles in the Pittsburgh region alone.
